The 2026 FIFA World Cup has taken its first scheduled break since the knockout stage began, with FIFA pausing action on Wednesday to allow the remaining eight teams’ crucial recovery time ahead of the quarter-finals.

Following weeks of near-daily matches across the United States, Canada and Mexico, the competition has been reduced to its final eight teams, with seven matches remaining to crown the new world champion.

FIFA has intentionally spaced out the remaining games to provide players with more recovery time, a move made necessary by the physical demands of the expanded 48-team format in which teams reaching the final may have to play up to eight matches.

The quarter-finals are scheduled to take place between July 9 and 11, with another rest day set for July 13.

The semi-finals will follow on July 14 and 15, the third-place playoff on July 18 and the final on July 19.

These additional recovery periods are vital because of the toll the tournament has taken on players, who have dealt with extensive travel throughout North America as well as difficult summer weather conditions in the host nations.

After Wednesday’s break, three further match-free days have been built into the calendar before the tournament ends.

No games will be played on July 13 ahead of the semi-finals or on July 16 and 17 before the final weekend.

The World Cup will resume on Thursday with the first quarter-final, marking the beginning of the decisive stage in the race for semi-final places.
