President Bola Tinubu has declared that Nigeria will never back down in the face of terrorism, banditry, or criminal threats.
Alongside this security commitment, the President promised intensified measures to tackle the economic challenges facing citizens.
The President’s message was delivered by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Sen. George Akume, during a Democracy Day church service at the National Christian Centre on Sunday.
Marking 27 years of unbroken democracy since 1999, Tinubu commended Nigerians for the sacrifices that have kept the nation’s democratic journey alive.
A statement from SGF media aide Yomi Odunuga noted that the high-profile event, themed “God of Hope, Actualise Our Dreams,” drew key leaders including Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Foreign Affairs Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu.
He paid tributes to pro-democracy activists of the June 12 struggle, noting that many endured persecution, injuries and death in that quest.
Acknowledging the hardship facing many households, the president said the government was fully aware of the economic strain, insecurity, kidnappings and displacement affecting communities across the country.
“Government is sensitive to all these pains, shares in these pains and has heard your cries,” he said, adding that the government was addressing the challenges with compassion and a strong sense of responsibility.
Addressing security concerns, President Tinubu acknowledged that recent attacks and kidnappings are painful reminders of the challenges ahead.
He, however, assured citizens that securing the safe return of all captives remains a top national priority, noting that security agencies are receiving the resources needed to protect lives and defend Nigeria’s territorial integrity.
“The government of Nigeria shall never succumb to terror, banditry, or any form of criminal intimidation,” the President declared.
Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, Tinubu cautioned against rising political tensions, urging Nigerians to reject violence, hate speech, and divisive rhetoric, emphasizing that democracy should never be treated as a battleground.
He appealed particularly to young Nigerians not to allow themselves to be used for thuggery, political violence, misinformation campaigns, ethnic abuse or religious intolerance.
“Do not rent out your conscience for money, drugs, political patronage or online applause. Your future is worth more than any politician’s temporary convenience.”
Ahead of the upcoming elections, President Tinubu urged key stakeholders—including religious, traditional, and civic leaders, families, and the media—to champion peace and tolerance.
At the same time, he praised the armed forces and security personnel, thanking them for the sacrifices they make to keep the nation’s democracy secure.
