Simi Breaks Silence: Singer Admits to Controversial Resurfaced Tweets

Following sustained online backlash over resurfaced social media posts, singer and mother, Simi, has finally addressed allegations stemming from tweets she shared more than a decade ago.

The controversy erupted after some old posts from her early twenties were recirculated online, prompting criticism and heated debates across social media platforms, particularly on X (formerly known as Twitter).

In a statement released on her page, Simi said she felt compelled to respond after being alerted to the trending conversation.

“I haven’t been on Twitter today, but someone brought a few of my old tweets to my attention and I can’t not address it,” she wrote.

The singer clarified that the tweets in question were posted 14 years ago when she was 23, stressing that she was not a child at the time and had no reason to make excuses for her past.

“Fourteen years ago, I was 23, so I was definitely not a child. I’m not here to make excuses because I don’t have anything to make excuses for. What I can’t let anyone do is twist my story to fit false narratives,” she stated.

Providing context, Simi explained that in 2012 she was living with her mother and assisting at her daycare centre while pursuing her music career.

According to her, she frequently tweeted about her daily experiences, as was common at the time.

“In 2012, I lived and helped out at my mom’s daycare while I was hustling my music. I tweeted everything that happened in my life, as we all did at the time. Kids can be mischievous.

“If a child did something I found funny, I tweeted about it. Kids are cute and lovable. I want to hug, kiss and cuddle them. I tweet about it. Nothing I tweeted was from perversion,” she explained.

She noted that she was not a public figure then and may not have fully understood how posts could later be interpreted or weaponised.

“I was not famous, so maybe if I was, I would have understood that anything is open to whatever interpretation, including being used falsely by a faceless mob. I’ve never been depraved in my life,” she added.

Addressing further criticism, Simi said people were free to revisit her old posts about harmless crushes or playful expressions from her youth, insisting she had nothing to hide.

“You can retweet all the tweets in the world about me loudly crushing on people I admired or being a cheeky young woman. I wasn’t trying to hide it because I don’t have anything to hide,” she wrote.

The singer also disclosed that members of her team had begun deleting some of the resurfaced tweets due to their sensitivity and the potential impact on her family.

“My team has been deleting some of my tweets because of how sensitive it is for my family. To be honest, I did not want to,” she revealed.

Reaffirming her stance against sexual violence, Simi maintained that her advocacy was longstanding and not reactionary.

“I have always spoken against rape and sexual assault even before you knew I existed. It’s not a costume I’m wearing, it’s who I am. I’ve never claimed to be perfect. I’ve never claimed to know everything. I said stop raping women. I stand by it,” she said.
