President Bola Tinubu held a meeting with Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday, as part of the royal’s week-long visit to Nigeria.

The Duke’s trip is aimed at promoting the expansion of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, a non-formal education framework that empowers young people to discover their passions and purpose.

The visit has brought together nearly 200 young participants from over 50 countries, along with global leaders, policymakers, and youth movement representatives, for an intensive three-day youth leadership programme and the award’s triennial forum in Lagos.

This event is expected to widen access to the award globally, building on Nigeria’s remarkable 37% surge in participation over the past year.

Prince Edward, chairman of the Award’s International Foundation, was accompanied by British High Commissioner Richard Montgomery and other officials, while Nigerian Minister of Finance Wale Edun was among those who joined President Tinubu at the meeting.

Persecondnews reports that the Duke’s schedule also includes meetings with senior ministers and international development agencies to strengthen partnerships in non-formal education.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, launched in Nigeria in 1986, has impacted over 30,000 young Nigerians and millions worldwide.

The visit marks a significant milestone in the award’s journey, celebrating its 70th anniversary in 2026.
