Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, has dismissed allegations of state-backed religious persecution, emphasizing the country’s constitutional commitment to freedom of religion and the rule of law.

“It’s impossible for any level of Nigerian government to support religious persecution in any form,” Tuggar said in Berlin, addressing concerns over alleged religious violence.

He made the remarks during a meeting with Germany’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Johann Wadephul, following US President Donald Trump’s decision to designate Nigeria as a “country of particular concern” over attacks on Christians.

Tuggar reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to protecting citizens’ rights, regardless of faith or ethnicity, and collaborating with international partners to promote peace and national unity.

The minister’s statement underscores Nigeria’s stance against religious persecution, amidst global attention on alleged violence.

The US designation has sparked debate, with Tuggar emphasizing Nigeria’s constitutional guarantees and commitment to religious freedom.

“Nigeria welcomes international cooperation to address security challenges, while maintaining its sovereignty.”
