Timi Dakolo, Apostle Lazarus in war of words over gospel artistes charging fees for performances

908

Popular Nigerian singer Timi Dakolo has publicly challenged Apostle Femi Lazarus over his criticism of gospel ministers who charge high fees to attend events.

Persecondnews reports that Lazarus, the lead pastor of Light Nation Church, has been vocal about his disapproval of gospel musicians who demand large sums of money to minister at church programs.

According to him, gospel singers should not treat worship as a business and should rely on God’s provision rather than financial negotiations and rewards.

His comments reignited a long-standing discussion in the Nigerian Christian community, with some agreeing that gospel music should be purely about ministry and not financial gain.

Reacting to Apostle Lazarus’ remarks, the singer strongly disagreed with the notion that gospel singers should perform for free or at minimal cost.

He accused the pastor of attempting to downplay the hard work and financial commitment that goes into creating music.

“Stop this gaslighting. Gospel singers are not beggars,” Dakolo wrote in response.

He emphasized that gospel artists, like professionals in any field, deserve to be paid fairly for their work, which involves studio sessions, production, rehearsals, and live performances.

The singer further pointed out that many churches can afford to compensate gospel ministers but often choose not to.

He advised that if a church is unwilling to pay invited gospel artists, they should make use of their own choir members and compensate them properly.

According to Dakolo, gospel music may be spiritual, but it is also an art that requires dedication, skill, and financial investment.

He questioned why pastors and other ministers receive honorariums while gospel musicians are expected to rely solely on faith for their sustenance.

Apostle Lazarus, however, has remained firm in his stance.

He believes that some gospel singers have turned ministry into a business venture, focusing more on financial gain than spiritual impact.

In his view, true gospel ministers should prioritize service to God over monetary rewards.

The disagreement between Dakolo and Lazarus has sparked diverse reactions from Nigerians, with many taking sides based on their beliefs about the role of gospel music in the church.
