The Federal Government has adopted and taken over the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) in Ijagun, Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.

Established by the Ogun State Government in 2005 by the the Governor Gbenga Daniel, TASUED is Nigeria’s first specialized University of Education and is named after the revered activist, educationist and founder of Mayflower School, Ikenne, the late Dr. Tai Solarin.

President Tinubu approved the adoption on Friday, thanking the Ogun State Government for inviting the Federal Government to take over the school.

“It is an opportunity for the Federal Government to honour Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who began the revolutionary free education programme in Western Nigeria and Dr. Tai Solarin, who spent most of his life educating our children and impacting patriotic and leadership lessons in them at Mayflower School in Ikenne,” President Tinubu said.

According to Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy in a statement on Sunday said: “The adoption of TASUED as a federal university is a significant milestone in the Federal Government’s efforts to promote education and teacher development in Nigeria.”

Onanuga added that the transition will require minimal federal investment, given the university’s well-developed infrastructure and academic programmes.

Persecondnews recalls that the federal government already has a specialized tertiary institution in Ogun State — the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB).

With TASUED’s new status, the Federal Government now owns and oversees seven education universities across the country, including Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education in Owerri, Adeyemi Federal University of Education in Ondo, and Federal University of Education, Kano, among others.
