Nigeria’s U17 women’s team, the Flamingos, secured a thrilling 1-0 victory over the Dominican Republic in their final Group A match at the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup.

Shakirat Moshood’s stunning 89th-minute strike from 24 yards sealed the win, propelling Nigeria to the quarterfinals.

Nigeria dominated possession in the match, played in driving rain, but struggled to breach the resolute Dominican Republic defence.

Captain Renata Mercedes and goalkeeper Rondon led a heroic resistance, thwarting the Flamingos’ 16 corner kicks.

Coach Bankole Olowookere made strategic substitutions, introducing Peace Effiong and Harmony Chidi after the hour.

However, it was Moshood’s fourth goal of the tournament that proved decisive.

Nigeria tops Group A with nine points, ahead of Ecuador, who defeated New Zealand 4-0.

The Flamingos will face the USA in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
