The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has vowed to avenge the killing of five soldiers on May 30 at a military checkpoint in the Obingwa local government area of Abia State.

Persecondnews recalls that the soldiers lost their lives in an attack by gunmen reportedly enforcing the outlawed IPOB’s sit-at-home directive.

The gunmen opened fire on a military checkpoint at Obikabia Junction, killing the soldiers.

The Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, and the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Benjamin Kalu, have both condemned the murders.

The Director of Defence Media Operations, Edward Buba, said in a statement on Friday that the military will strike back.

Buba said: “Troops of OP UDO KA deployed at Obikabia Junction checkpoint in Obingwa Local Government Area adjourning Aba metropolis in Abia State were attacked and sadly killed by terrorists of IPOB/ESN.

“The troops deployed to enforce peace in the area and protect the citizens were massively attacked by the terrorists.

“The terrorists, in three-tinted Prado Toyota SUVs and others from built-up areas surrounding the checkpoint, sprang a surprise attack on the checkpoint. The attack sadly took the lives of five personnel of the armed forces killed in action.

“The armed forces mourn the deaths of these troops, as each and every soldier lost in battle is a terrible loss.

“The investigation into the attack is still underway. As always, it’s crucial to recognize that terrorists often draw support from the local population, and this case is no different.

“Winning the war without the support of the people is close to impossible. The IPOB capitalized on this to perpetrate attacks on the troops. The situation leaves more to be desired.”

“In light of this incident, a strong military response is essential to deter future attacks. The military will take firm and swift action to ensure the safety and security of its troops.

“We would bring overwhelming military pressure on the group to ensure their total defeat,” he added.
