Nigerian Legend Jay-Jay Okocha Ready for NFF Role, Sets Terms

...I will take it with the right conditions

Nigerian football legend Jay-Jay Okocha is ready to accept a leadership role within the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), provided the conditions are right.

Okocha, who cited his passion for the sport and desire for its growth, stated, “I’ll take it with the right conditions.”

The wide-ranging interview with Jay-Jay Okocha, featured on “The Exchange Podcast” with Femi Soneye, is now available for streaming on Spotify and YouTube, according to Persecondnews.

His willingness to serve comes with a clear caveat, however, stemming from a negative past experience during his tenure as Chairman of the Delta State Football Association.

Okocha’s stint as Delta State FA Chairman was marked by frustration and lack of funding.

He revealed that he personally funded the association’s activities, highlighting structural obstacles hindering progress.

“I was using my money to run the FA,” Okocha said.

“I decided to leave… I’m not the kind of person who would stay in a place where I’m not comfortable, just to be a chairman or a president, if I’m not adding value.”

Okocha’s illustrious career spans multiple leagues, including the Nigerian Professional Football League, Bundesliga, Süper Lig, Ligue 1, Premier League, EFL Championship, and Qatar Stars League.

He began his career at Enugu Rangers before moving to Borussia Neunkirchen in Germany’s third division in 1990.

Regarded as one of Africa’s greatest footballers, Okocha earned 73 caps for Nigeria, scoring 14 goals, and was part of three FIFA World Cup squads.

His exceptional dribbling skills earned him the nickname “African Maradona”.

Okocha’s influence on the global stage is undeniable, with German playmaker Mesut Özil and Brazilian legend Ronaldinho citing him as an inspiration.

Özil has often spoken about Okocha’s impact on his playing style, while Ronaldinho, who played alongside Okocha at Paris Saint-Germain, has also praised his idol’s skill and creativity.

Okocha’s legacy continues to inspire, with his FIFA ‘Legend’ status recognizing his contributions to the beautiful game.
