INEC Chairman-Nominee Proposes Drone Deployment for Election Security

Prof. Joash Amupitan has announced his intention to conduct a comprehensive audit of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), with a particular focus on the logistics for the 2023 general elections.

This, he said, is to identify the challenges facing the electoral management body and propose suitable solutions in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.

The nominated Chairman of INEC disclosed this during his screening by the Senate Committee of the Whole on Thursday, 16 October.

Quoting from a ruling of the Supreme Court, Amupitan said that the use of INEC’s Results Viewing Portal (IREV) was not a part of the results collation system of the commission.

He, however, pointed out that this fact was not made known to Nigerians prior to the 2023 general elections.

“A lot of people thought it was part of the results collation system but the Supreme Court said it is not,” he said.

He said there was need for an electoral offences commission to help investigate and prosecute electoral offences.

“INEC does not have the capacity for investigation and prosecution at the moment,” he said.
