Uninspiring Super Eagles Edge Lesotho 2-1 in World Cup Qualifiers

"The deadlock was broken in the 55th minute when Captain William Troost-Ekong converted a penalty, making amends for his own goal in the last World Cup qualifiers against South Africa"

The Super Eagles have secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Lesotho in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, South Africa.

Nigeria dominated possession in the first half, but their attack proved toothless.

Goalkeeper Sekhoane Moerane was the key factor, making crucial saves to deny both Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman.

The deadlock finally broke in the 55th minute when Captain William Troost-Ekong converted a penalty.

The goal was a redemptive moment for Troost-Ekong, who had scored an own goal in the previous World Cup qualifier against South Africa.

The penalty was awarded after a beautiful cross from the full-back resulted in a foul in the box.

Lookman was instrumental in Nigeria’s attacking plays, with every dangerous move coming from his flank.

The Super Eagles sealed the win when Akor Adams scored on his debut, coming on as a substitute for Tolu Arokodare.

Adams’ goal extended Nigeria’s lead to 2-0, putting pressure on Lesotho to mount a comeback.

Lesotho reduced the deficit to 2-1 in the dying minutes of the game, thanks to a comical goalkeeping error from Stanley Nwabali.

Despite the unconvincing display, Nigeria held on to their lead, securing three crucial points in their World Cup qualifying campaign.

The Super Eagles now face Benin Republic in their final group game, with Ademola Lookman set to miss the match due to a yellow card accumulation.

Nigeria needs a win to keep their World Cup hopes alive, while Lesotho’s chances of qualifying for the tournament seem slim.
