Just in: Akpabio Pledges Accountability as Senate Resumes Duties

545

As the Senate resumes its plenary session, Senate President Godswill Akpabio has reaffirmed the chamber’s commitment to accountability and responsiveness.

During his opening address on Tuesday, October 7, after the Senate’s 10-week recess, Akpabio urged lawmakers to recommit themselves to accountability, discipline, and purposeful governance.

He reaffirmed the Senate’s responsibility to the Nigerian people, stating: “To the citizens of Nigeria, we hear you. You asked us not for excuses, but for results. We will remain accountable and responsive.”

Akpabio underscored the importance of maintaining order within the legislature, warning against actions that could undermine democratic institutions.

“Those who seek to weaken the legislature seek to delete the structure of democracy itself,” he declared.

While describing governance as a “sacred duty of trust and not theatrics”, Akpabio called for competence over popularity, saying, “If our politics must remain, let us choose the right men for the service of our nation, not the loudest voices or those who seek office as an ornament, but those worthy of the people’s trust.”

In urging quick action regarding the nation’s widespread flood disasters, the Senate President offered assurances to the victims.

He emphasized that the 10th Senate is fully committed to confronting the crisis and will not abandon efforts to resolve it.

On the economic front, he highlighted notable improvements in Nigeria’s oil production, citing a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to boost its revenue base.

He commended President Bola Tinubu’s administration for its prudent fiscal management, which has successfully stabilised state finances.

Persecondnews had earlier reported that the upper chamber had earlier shifted its resumption from September 23 to October 7, extending its annual recess by two weeks and halting deliberations on several key national priorities.
