6 Vital Highlights from the National Summit CommuniquéNational Summit Communiqué (July 2025)

Presented by Chief Emeka Anyaoku and convened by The Patriots

1. Call for a People-Driven Constitution
The Summit condemned the 1999 Constitution as unrepresentative and illegitimate, having not emanated from the will of the people. Delegates unanimously called for a new, democratic, and inclusive Constitution anchored on true federalism, social justice, and equity.

2. Creation of a Constituent Assembly and Referendum
To achieve this, it was proposed that a non-partisan Constituent Assembly be elected—comprising representatives of diverse Nigerian interests to draft the new Constitution. This draft must be validated through a national referendum before presidential assent.

3. Legal Recognition of Independent Candidates
The proposed Constitution should include clear provisions for independent candidates at all levels of elections, eliminating the exclusive monopoly of political parties and broadening access to leadership positions.

4. Restructuring Towards Genuine Federalism
A central resolution was the return to a true federal structure, granting federating units autonomy similar to the First Republic. This includes fiscal federalism, devolution of powers, and the right to have sub-national constitutions.

5. Reduction in Cost of Governance
The Summit called for significant cost-cutting reforms, including a cap on the number of ministers and political appointees, and the abolition of the two-chamber legislature in favour of a more cost-effective legislative system.

6. Comprehensive Electoral Reforms
Delegates demanded that all elections be held on a single day, BVAS and electronic result transmission be made mandatory, and the judiciary be removed as the ultimate decider of elections. These reforms aim to restore voters’ control over democracy.

Conclusion:
Chief Emeka Anyaoku’s communiqué represents a bold and patriotic call for systemic reform of Nigeria’s constitutional and democratic foundations. By embracing independent candidacy and the resolutions of the Summit, Nigeria has a unique opportunity to rebuild a nation that is inclusive, equitable, and truly governed by the will of its people.
