The Federal Government on Thursday closed its case in the ongoing trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), facing charges related to terrorism and treason.

The announcement was made by the Federal Government’s lawyer, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), after the fifth prosecution witness (identified as EEE for security reasons) completed their testimony and cross-examination by Kanu’s lawyer, Dr. Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), before Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Awomolo informed the court that after presenting five witnesses and a wealth of evidence, including broadcasts of the IPOB leader’s activities, the prosecution believes it has presented sufficient evidence to conclude its case.

“I therefore close the case,” the senior lawyer said.

After the announcement, the lead defence counsel, Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), told the court that they would be opting for a no-case submission, which would be filed in due course.

Persecondnews recalls that Kanu has been in DSS detention in Abuja since he was rearrested in Kenya and subjected to extraordinary rendition back to Nigeria on June 27, 2021.

He was arrested by Kenyan security operatives in collaboration with Nigerian authorities.
