The countdown has begun for the highly anticipated 3rd African U18 and U20 Athletics Championships, scheduled to take place in Abeokuta, Ogun State, from July 16 to 20, 2025.

Kola Daniel, Special Assistant on Media, Office of the Director General of the National Sports Commission, announced that the MKO Abiola International Stadium, recently upgraded, has received certification from the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) and is ready to host the event.

Persecondnews reports that over 50 countries are expected to participate, with national contingents arriving in Abeokuta from July 12.

The prestigious event promises to showcase emerging talents and speed, with Nigeria set to shine on home soil.

“The championships have produced global icons in the past, including Falilat Ogunkoya, Mary Onyali, Olusoji Fasuba, Deji Aliyu, and Yusuf Alli, who all rose to fame after competing in similar junior events.

“Abeokuta’s growing reputation as a hub for elite sporting events in Africa is further solidified by its upcoming hosting of the WAFU B U-17 football championship.

“The city’s preparations for these events demonstrate its capacity to stage major international competitions,” the statement reads.
