In a significant stride towards enhancing healthcare services in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has approved the employment of 34 resident doctors.

The newly employed doctors are the first batch of the 60 medical residency trainees in eight faculties and specialties across FCTA hospitals.

Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant to the Minister on Public Communications and Social Media, announced on Wednesday that the initiative will attract highly skilled medical professionals, ultimately enhancing healthcare services in the federal capital.

He said: “Among the 34 employed doctors, five are in the psychiatry department, four in internal medicine, one in general surgery, one in anesthesiology, eight in family medicine, six in ophthalmology, and nine in obstetrics and gynecology.”

According to Olayinka, the FCTA Civil Service Commission will soon initiate the recruitment process for the remaining 26 resident doctors, comprising specialized positions in psychiatry, internal medicine, general surgery, anesthesiology, and pediatrics.

The statement said: “The employment drive aligns with the FCT administration’s commitment to improving the healthcare system by ensuring the availability of skilled medical professionals across various specialties.”

The Minister’s recent comprehensive overhaul of the FCT health sector may be linked to concerns raised by the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) in the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) in January 2025.

Persecondnews recalls that ARD had expressed concerns about the deplorable working conditions, rundown infrastructure, and other pressing issues plaguing hospitals in the nation’s capital.
