Ibok-Ete Ibas, the newly sworn-in sole administrator of Rivers State, has vowed to work with all stakeholders to restore peace and stability in the state.
Ibas, a retired vice admiral, was sworn in by President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday, following the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.
The state has been embroiled in a prolonged political crisis due to a power struggle between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor and estranged godfather, Mr. Nyesom Wike, who is also the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The crisis led to Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency and the suspension of Fubara, his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, and members of the state’s legislature.
Speaking after his swearing-in ceremony at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Ibas said: “First of all, I think we know the circumstances that led to where we are here. Mr. President made it very clear in this broadcast, that the main issue is maintaining law and order in the state.”
He noted the need for collaboration, saying, “I think for any meaningful activities to take place in Rivers state, the utmost task is that I will have to work together with all other stakeholders to ensure that we bring peace, order and security and stability to the people and government of River state and Nigeria at large.”
Meanwhile, both the Senate and the House of Representatives have postponed the debate on the emergency rule until Thursday, March 20.
