APC Council Chairmen’s Forced Takeover Sparks Murder, Mayhem in Osun

732

Tragedy struck in Osun State on Monday as one of the sacked council chairmen was fatally shot by unidentified gunmen while attempting to forcibly regain his position.

The deceased was identified as Mr. Remi Abass, the former chairman of Irewole Local Government.

Report reaching Persecondnews said he was shot fatally at the local government secretariat in Ikire on the Ibadan-Ile-Ife expressway.

Witnesses reported that the attackers launched a brazen daytime assault on the secretariat on Monday, discharging multiple gunshots.

“It was sudden and chaotic. People ran for safety,” said a local resident who did not want his name in print.

Confirming the incident, the State Police Command spokesperson, SP Yemisi Opalola, said investigations had begun.

“We are working to apprehend the perpetrators and restore calm in the area,” she said.

Abass was among the local government chairmen, elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, sacked by the Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo in November 2022.

Meanwhile, two persons have also been confirmed dead in Boripe council area of the state over the fracas that erupted when some hoodlums allegedly working for the People’s Democratic Party and the All Progressives Congress attempted to take over the council.

The victims, whose names were given as Ege and Igara, according to witnesses, were shot dead by hoodlums.

Persecondnews recalls that Gov. Ademola Adeleke had at the weekend alerted security agencies of plans by some people to cause mayhem in the state on Monday over the Appeal Court judgment, ordering the return of the sacked council bosses.

He had called on President Bola Tinubu and the Inspector General of Police to stave off the violence.
