In fulfillment of a critical infrastructure promise, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mr. Nyesom Wike, on Monday inaugurated the Haharati River Ukya access road in the Abaji Area Council, Abuja.

The newly completed 5-km road, which connects the Haharati settlement to the Abaji Lokoja Road, represents a major breakthrough in the FCT’s initiatives to enhance connectivity and drive development across the satellite towns.

Speaking at the inauguration of the project, a promise Wike made during a stakeholders’ meeting in January 2024, he emphasized the importance of keeping promises and delivering impactful projects that enhance the lives of residents.

He said: “When we held the stakeholders’ meeting last year, I assured you that this project would be ready for commissioning by December.

“Today, we are here in January 2025, celebrating its completion. This is a testament to our commitment to delivering on our promises.”

The minister praised the community and contractors for their cooperative efforts which ultimately led to the project’s timely completion.

He reaffirmed the administration’s dedication to enhancing regional security by announcing the establishment of two new police divisions which are currently under construction in the area.

Wike stressed the government’s comprehensive approach to balanced development, ensuring that growth is evenly distributed between the Federal Capital Territory’s city center and its surrounding satellite towns.

“While we are focused on developing the city, we are equally committed to uplifting the satellite towns.

“This project is a perfect example of that commitment. We are here to serve and contribute to the development of the FCT. Every promise we make is a promise we will fulfill,” he said, promising to include additional road projects for the Abaji community in the 2025 budget.

In his speech, the Executive Chairman of Abaji Area Council, Mr. Abubakar Umar Abdullahi, lauded the project as a transformative initiative that addresses both social and economic challenges in the area.

He said: “The completion of this road is highly significant as it provides a vital link to Abaji Lokoja Expressway and serves as a diversion in case of emergencies on the federal highway.

“It is a project that underscores the strategic vision of His Excellency.”

Abdullahi commended the administration for its steadfast backing of transformative initiatives within the council, acknowledging the positive impact these projects have on the community.

He highlighted several ongoing initiatives, including the establishment of two police divisions, the near-completion of an 80-bed hospital, and the development of a state-of-the-art 750-capacity ICT centre in Abaji.

Abdullahi also said the area is benefiting from vocational and agricultural empowerment programs, which are currently training hundreds of residents, thereby enhancing human capital development and bolstering food security.
