The National Sports Commission (NSC) has pledged its support for the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the new Super Eagles coach, Eric Sekou Chelle.

The NSC Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, made the pledge during the unveiling ceremony of Chelle as the new Super Eagles head coach.

Dikko noted the importance of supporting the NFF, stating that “if the NFF succeeds, we (NSC) succeed. If the NFF fails, we fail.”

He also announced the establishment of a Presidential Support Group (PSG) to complement the NFF’s efforts in qualifying for the World Cup.

He, however, clarified that the PSG is not intended to take over the work of the NFF, but rather to complement it.

Dikko also expressed his satisfaction with the process that led to Chelle’s appointment, describing it as “thorough.”

He congratulated Chelle on his new role and highlighted the benefits of having a Franco-Malian coach, citing the potential for strengthening bonds across the West African subregion.

The NSC Chairman also solicited support for Chelle, pointing to his impressive record with the Malian national team.

Persecondnews recalls that Chelle had coached Mali to 14 wins, 5 draws, and only 3 losses in 22 games, with over 40 goals scored and just 13 conceded.

In a related development, NFF President Ibrahim Gusau revealed that Chelle has signed a two-year contract with the option of an additional year if he qualifies the Super Eagles for the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals.

Chelle will work with the Super Eagles B team in a supervisory capacity, with Coach Ogunmodede and Fidelis Ilechukwu overseeing the team’s preparation for the upcoming CHAN competition.
