Presidency to Bauchi Governor: You are playing “irresponsible politics” over tax reform bills

615

The presidency has slammed Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed for allegedly playing “irresponsible politics” with the tax reform bills currently before the National Assembly.

This accusation comes on the heels of a heated exchange between Mohammed and the Presidency over the bills.

In December 2024, Mohammed, who chairs the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum, criticized the bills, claiming they favor one region and that it amounts to “calls for anarchy.”

He warned that President Bola Tinubu would see “our real color” if the bill was passed.

Persecondnews recalls that the Presidency subsequently asked Mohammed to withdraw his comments, describing them as “inflammatory” and “direct threats” toward the federal government.

However, Mohammed refused to back down, stating that he stood by his comments and therefore, would not be threatened.

He also criticized the presidency’s approach to the tax reform debate, urging them to avoid arrogance and listen to the concerns of Nigerians.

In a statement issued on Friday, Sunday Dare, the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication, asked Mohammed to focus on governance and alleviating poverty in Bauchi rather than playing “irresponsible politics.”

Dare noted that the Tinubu administration is committed to development and improving the overall well-being of Nigerians.

“The focus of this government is on how to build stronger collaborations with sub-nationals and other critical stakeholders on matters that affect the lives of Nigerians,” he said.

“President Tinubu won an election and secured a national mandate from Nigerians and he will not surrender that to satisfy the palate of some pseudo activists and later day crusaders.

“President Tinubu is a listening leader and also a leader who strongly believes in the institutions of the state.

“On the Tax Reform Bills, the President was clear that anyone and groups that feel strongly about this matter now before the National Assembly should take advantage of the legislative process.

“Attempts to stampede or abort this process must be regarded as undemocratic and self-serving.”

The Presidency also questioned Mohammed’s performance as governor, asking how well the people of Bauchi state, who rank among the most impoverished in Nigeria, are faring under his leadership.

Dare noted that Mohammed has a greater duty and responsibility to the people of his state, just like President Tinubu has a duty to all Nigerians.

This development highlights the ongoing tensions between the presidency and some state governors over the tax reform bills.

The bills have been a subject of controversy, with some governors and stakeholders expressing concerns that they could exacerbate economic challenges in certain regions.
