The Senate has taken a significant step towards boosting infrastructure development in the country’s southwest zone with the passing of the South-West Development Commission Bill, 2024.

All senators present in the plenary unanimously approved the bill during its third reading, marking this milestone.

Sen. Gbenga Daniel, of Oguneast Senatorial District, sponsored the bill.

The proposed commission will oversee the allocation of funds from the federation account and donations to address infrastructural challenges in the region.

Additionally, the commission will tackle pressing ecological, environmental, and developmental challenges, driving growth and development in the South-West region.

Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, who presided over the plenary session, commended the Senate Committee on Special Duties for its swift legislative work on the bill’s details.

Jibrin said: “I commend the committee for a job well done, especially the chairman, Sen. Kaka Shehu Lawan.

“I say more grease to the elbows of the chairman, and I also commend members of the committee for working tirelessly during this assignment.

“The bill will help to deal with the infrastructure and ecological challenges of the Southwest. When that region is developed, it will also affect the entire nation.

“We thank Mr. President for giving assent to similar bills earlier passed by the National Assembly, and we look forward to having him assent to the South-West Development Commission Bill.”
