Just in: Few hours after arrest, human rights activist Sowore released

Mr. Omoyele Sowore, the convener of the #RevolutionNow protest and publisher of SaharaReporters, who was arrested by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport on Sunday on arrival in the country, has been released.

Sowore’s arrest may be linked to his involvement in the #EndBadGovernance protest, which took place across Nigeria in August.

Persecondnews recalls that the 10-day protest was organized by the Take-It-Back Movement and other civil society groups, demanding an end to what they called bad governance in the country.

However, Sowore announced his release via his X page a few hours after his arrest and detention.

He wrote: “I have just been released by the Nigerian Immigration after a brief detention and my passport released back to me.”

Earlier on arrival, he wrote: “I had just arrived in Nigeria from the USA to the MMIA in Lagos; upon reaching Nigerian Immigration, my passport was seized, and they told me they had orders to detain me.

“In case this becomes another prolonged and protracted detention, I urge our citizens to ensure they ALL stop tyranny by all means acceptable and necessary, by engaging in the planned series of direct actions slated for October 1st and beyond.”
