The Minister of Sports Development, Sen. John Enoh, has charged the newly elected Chairman, Kelechi Onwudiwe, and other executive members of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) FCT Chapter to provide selfless and purposeful leadership for the association.

Specifically, Enoh urged Onwudiweace, an ace broadcaster, to be upright in the discharge of his duties.

According to Persecondnews, Onwudiwe, who works for Beats FM, defeated his closest challenger, Tolu Oguntimehin of ITV, with 77 votes compared to 68 for the other broadcaster.

Over 150 sports writers gathered at the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja on Friday to elect the new leadership.

The Minister also urged other elected SWAN officers to be outstanding in carrying out their assigned responsibilities.

Enoh, represented by Mrs. Kehinde Ajayi, the Ministry Director of Press, said: “There are a lot of responsibilities on the shoulders of those who are leading this association; you are not elected to do what you like, but to the bidding of the people.

“You have sworn an oath, so we don’t expect you to perform less; we expect you to be outstanding in discharging your duties. May God Almighty guide and lead you in this your tenure.”

Persecondnews recalls that during the first ballot in April, the elections for the positions of chairman and treasurer of the association were inconclusive, leading to yesterday’s rerun.

In the April election, Jane Frances Nweze edged out Taefeek Lawal for the position of treasurer.

In his acceptance speech, Onwudiwe said he was prepared to lead the association to greater heights and reunite members.

“I am glad to win this election, and I am prepared to lead our great association to greater heights. I aspire to restore the respect we once enjoyed. I will collaborate with my fellow contestants and carry everyone along in this quest for greater SWAN.

“The new EXCO will do all we can to unite the association. Most importantly, I will ensure that the welfare and growth of our members remain our top priorities. We have lost a lot in the past, but we will gain a lot as well as we begin to reposition SWAN,” he said.

Other EXCO members are Okoye Victor, who emerged as vice chairman; Jane Nweze, treasurer; Nìyí Busari, financial secretary; and Samuel Ahmadu, who emerged as secretary.

Joan Iwuchukwu and Friday Joshua were elected welfare secretary and assistant secretary, respectively.
