Just in: Tinubu reconvenes emergency ECOWAS Summit after expiration of Niger Republic ultimatum

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reconvened emergency ECOWAS Extraordinary Summit following the expiration of the one-week ultimatum given to the coupists in Niger Republic.

Tinubu, who is also the Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States, will be considering and discussing the next line action to restore democratic normalcy in the beleaguered country.

The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, August 10, in Abuja.

Persecondnews earlier reported that the Nigerian Senate spurned Tinubu’s request to send Nigerian soldiers to Niger Republic in a bid to restore constitutional democracy in the country and implement the decisions of ECOWAS.

The senators doused the tension in the region over a possible military action in Niger during a two-hour closed-door session to discuss the letter written to the Senate on August 4 by President Tinubu on the decisions taken by the regional body following a coup by soldiers in the country.

They asked ECOWAS to strengthen political and diplomatic options and other means to resolve the political impasse in Niger.
