The Senate on Wednesday confirmed the appointment of Justice Olukayode Ariwoola as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).

Persecondnews reports that the Senate Minority Leader, Sen. Ibrahim Gobir, had moved two motions for the Upper Chamber to screen Ariwoola at the resumption of plenary on Wednesday.

His motions were approved by the lawmakers following a voice vote called by the Senate President, Dr Ahmad Lawan.

Subsequently, the Senators accorded Ariwoola honour as he and all Supreme Court justices, President of the Court of Appeal, President of the Federal High Court, President of the National Industrial Court and Secretary of the National Judicial Council filed into the chambers and took their seats.

Without subjecting the CJN to any scrutiny or questioning, the Senate thereafter asked Ariwoola to take a bow and leave.

Justice Ariwoola of the Supreme Court on June 27, 2022, took the oath of office as the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) before President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House.

On taking the judicial oath, the new CJN swore to be faithful and bear true allegiance to the Federal Government of Nigeria, as well as defend the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Persecondnews reports that 62-year-old Ariwoola from Oyo State, takes over from immediate past CJN, Justice Tanko Muhammad, who resigned on health grounds.
