COVID-19 : LASG raises fears of more cases in  Lagos, orders attendees at Eko Hotel AMVCA to self-isolate now

Worried by possible fresh cases of the virulent Coronavirus in Lagos State, the State Government has alerted residents that attendees at a recent African Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) held at Eko Hotels might have come in contact with one of the confirmed cases of the virus in Lagos.

According to the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, the attendees are most likely to have been exposed to #COVID19 infection.

He has, therefore, directed all the participants at the event held on March 14 who might have contact with the new case (names withheld) to observe strict self-isolation immediately and also report to the relevant authorities by calling a toll-free line – 08000corona.

Abayomi had tweeted on his twitter handle@ProfAkin#COVID19 LagosAlert: “I hereby notify you (the public) that all participants at African Magic Viewers’ Choice Award (AMVCA) held on March 14 at  Eko Hotels may have come in contact with one of the confirmed cases in Lagos and are most likely to have been exposed to #COVID19 infection.’’

Meanwhile, the commissioner has allayed fears that the virus is airborne, saying “it is not airborne but droplet borne; the droplets (sputum) from the mouth remains active on the ground until a few hours.

Abayomi said three centres have been established across the state for rapid testing of suspected cases and that  more would be set up to cope with the screening.

“We test at least 50 people daily at each centre bringing it to 150 per day.

“In order to ensure that people are not wrongly diagnosed through the rapid test – positive or negative – we subject the findings or results to further laboratory tests for accuracy,’’ he said at a media briefing addressed by Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the State House, Ikeja, on Tuesday evening.
