… It’s barbaric, despicable and an abomination — judge

For desecrating God’s Temple by having anal sex with a nine-year-old boy, 42-year-old commercial motorcyclist, Nonso Onyeje, is to spend the next 14 years behind bars in Delta State, Nigeria.

A State High Court in Asaba which gave the judgment described the act as barbaric, despicable and an abomination.

Onyeje, who was tried for unnatural/sodomy, committed the crime on the altar of God Delight City Church in Ibusa near Asaba.

Justice Ngozi Azinge found the accused guilty of forcefully having “multiple anal sexual intercourse’’ with the victim, a pupil of Royal Pathway International School, Asaba, (name withheld).

The judge, who refused the allocutus by the accused’s lawyer, said the defiler deserved the 14 years maximum punishment prescribed by law.

“The act is barbaric, despicable and an abomination. People like him do not deserved mercy.

“People like you should be locked away from society so that you don’t go around defiling innocent children.

“This will serve as a deterrent to others as cases of defilement in society is alarming,” Justice Azinge said.

The convict was said to have committed the offence on March 23, 2017 at Okwe near Asaba.

An unnatural offence/sodomy is punishable under Section 214(1) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Delta State, 2016.

Earlier, the Prosecution led by Mrs Uche Akamagwuna, who is the Director Sexual Offence/Domestic Violence in the Ministry of Justice, had told the court that the accused (Onyeje) committed the offence March 23, 2017 at Okwe.

Reacting to the judgment, the State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Peter Mrakpor, said sexual offenders would not go unpunished in the state.

“The judgment has given credence to the state government’s fight against rape, defilement, sodomy, indecent assault and violence against children and women.’’

He said the government would continue to protect the rights of vulnerable persons and vowed to bring offenders of sexual abuse and molestation to book.
