Ahead of the NBBF elections scheduled for later this year, the National Sports Commission (NSC) has called for unity among basketball stakeholders in the country.

To comply with FIBA’s insistence on a structured, rule-bound electoral cycle, the Commission is advocating for peace and cooperation to safeguard the progress of Nigerian basketball on the global stage.

“This is a crucial moment for basketball in Nigeria. We must all put the game first. The future of our athletes, our national teams, and our global reputation depends on collective responsibility and adherence to due process,” Bukola Olopade, NSC Director General said in Abuja on Wednesday.

“FIBA has provided a clear pathway with the new election timeline. I urge all stakeholders to embrace dialogue, respect the regulations, and work together to ensure a credible, transparent, and widely accepted electoral process,” Olopade added.

He spoke at a press conference with the theme, “Nigeria Basketball Federation Election Pathway”, held at the Media Centre of Moshood Abiola National stadium, Abuja on Wednesday, attended by Persecondews sports correspondent.

According to official communication from the international body, the current NBBF board’s tenure has been extended to October 15, 2026.

The directive mandates that elections for new leadership must occur between September 15 and October 15, 2026, immediately following the conclusion of the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup.

Olopade reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to establishing a stable, forward-looking basketball framework.

He emphasized that this approach ensures full compliance with global standards while safeguarding Nigeria’s reputation in major international competitions.
