US Lawmaker Warns Against Nigeria’s Breakup, Backs New Security Pact to Curb Christian Persecution

United States Representative Riley Moore has cautioned against any push to divide Nigeria, warning that such a move would deepen instability, embolden terrorists, and further endanger vulnerable Christian communities across the country and the wider African continent.

Speaking after a fact-finding visit to Nigeria, Moore said he held extensive high-level meetings with government officials, church leaders, humanitarian organisations, and internally displaced persons (IDPs) to better understand the scale and impact of violent persecution affecting Christians and other civilians.

According to the US congressman, the notion of breaking up Nigeria did not arise in any serious policy discussions during his engagements, stressing instead that efforts to encourage separatist sentiments would ultimately harm the very communities they claim to protect, particularly in the North and Middle Belt regions where insecurity remains acute.

Moore warned that a destabilised Nigeria would create fertile ground for terrorist expansion, worsening humanitarian suffering and threatening regional security. He reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for the protection of Christians and all Nigerians caught in the cycle of violence driven by extremist groups.

The lawmaker, however, expressed optimism over a newly signed security cooperation agreement between the United States and Nigeria, describing it as a critical step toward confronting terrorism, restoring stability, and strengthening bilateral relations between both nations.

Reiterating his humanitarian concern, Moore said his mission remains focused on saving lives, supporting peace, and ensuring that those affected by insecurity receive urgent international attention and protection.

He concluded with a message of solidarity and faith, offering prayers for Nigeria and all those enduring the consequences of prolonged violence.
