One of Nigeria’s most accomplished energy executives, Bala Wunti, has been appointed as the inaugural Chief Executive Officer of the World Energy Council (WEC) Nigeria, in a landmark move that positions one of the country’s foremost energy reformers to lead national conversations on energy security, investment and sustainability.
The appointment, announced by the Board of WEC Nigeria, establishes the organisation’s first dedicated executive leadership structure since Nigeria became a member of the World Energy Council in 1960, signalling a new era of strategic leadership for the country’s energy sector.
Wunti brings more than 30 years of experience across the upstream, midstream and downstream segments of the petroleum industry, having built a distinguished career at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, where he spearheaded several of the country’s most significant commercial and operational reforms.
As Chief Upstream Investment Officer of NNPC Upstream Investment Services (NUIMS), Wunti managed Nigeria’s multibillion-dollar joint venture and production-sharing contract portfolio, leading initiatives that restored investor confidence, enhanced operational efficiency and unlocked new production opportunities.
He was instrumental in the successful renegotiation of Nigeria’s Deep Offshore Production Sharing Contracts (PSCs), ending decades of stalemate and helping secure significantly higher revenues for the Federal Government. He also championed cost optimisation measures that reduced upstream production costs to below $10 per barrel, making Nigeria’s oil industry more competitive globally.
During his tenure at the Petroleum Products Marketing Company (PPMC), Wunti introduced the landmark Operation White initiative, a technology-driven petroleum distribution monitoring system that dramatically improved transparency, accountability and nationwide product tracking, helping curb diversion and strengthen fuel supply across the country.
As Chief Strategy and Sustainability Officer, he played a pivotal role in NNPC’s transformation into a commercially driven energy company, helping shape strategic reforms that attracted billions of dollars in investment while positioning the company for long-term growth.
Widely regarded as a leading advocate of Nigeria’s gas development agenda, Wunti also led several commercial negotiations involving liquefied natural gas projects and gas sales agreements, while promoting domestic gas utilisation as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s energy transition.
Beyond Nigeria, Wunti has represented the country on the OPEC Economic Commission Board and the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), contributing to global policy discussions on energy security, market stability and the future of hydrocarbons in an evolving energy landscape.
His leadership has also extended to institutional reforms, including implementing internationally certified management systems at NAPIMS and establishing a modern Command and Control Centre to combat crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism.
Commenting on his appointment, Wunti said Nigeria’s energy future must be anchored on practical solutions rather than ideology.
“Nigeria’s energy future cannot be shaped by ideology alone. It must be grounded in the realities of energy security, affordability, sustainability and national development. WEC Nigeria will bring government, industry, investors, academia and society into a credible, impartial platform that converts dialogue into informed decisions, investable solutions and measurable progress.”
Under his leadership, WEC Nigeria will focus on strengthening national energy dialogue, producing evidence-based research, convening industry leaders and connecting Nigeria’s energy priorities with the World Energy Council’s global network.
The organisation will also champion practical solutions to the global Energy Trilemma—balancing energy security, affordability and environmental sustainability—while supporting Nigeria’s ambition to expand electricity access, deepen domestic gas utilisation, attract investment and accelerate economic development.
A respected energy strategist and alumnus of executive programmes at Harvard Business School and the Blavatnik School of Government at the University of Oxford, Wunti is widely recognised for combining technical expertise, commercial acumen, policy leadership and international energy diplomacy, making him one of the most influential figures in Nigeria’s energy sector.
