In a dramatic rescue operation, Nigerian troops have freed Mrs. Amina Abubakar after a violent clash with bandits in Tunga village.
She is the widow of the former Director of Defence Information, the late retired Maj.-Gen. Abubakar Rabe.
The rescue comes under heartbreaking circumstances; both Mrs. Abubakar and her husband were kidnapped on May 30, 2026, but the retired general passed away in captivity on June 13.
Confirming her rescue on Monday, Maj.- Gen. Samaila Uba, the Director of Defence Information, said the breakthrough was achieved through a high-pressure, coordinated offensive by Operation FASAN YAMMA and the Nigerian Air Force.
“The relentless military push forced the bandits into a corner, allowing troops to overpower them and secure her freedom.
“During sustained offensive operations and mounting pressure on the criminal elements, troops made contact with the bandits at Tunga Village, leading to the successful recovery of Mrs Abubakar,” he said.
“In the course of the encounter, the bandits shot Mrs Abubakar before abandoning her and fleeing under the overwhelming pressure from advancing troops.”
The defence spokesperson disclosed that Mrs Abubakar was immediately evacuated to a military medical facility, where she is currently receiving treatment and responding positively.
He added that the leadership of the Armed Forces of Nigeria remains committed to ensuring the full recovery of its personnel and is providing the necessary support to their families during this difficult period.
Uba further assured that military operations against the perpetrators would continue until they are brought to justice.
“Troops will sustain ongoing operations to track down and neutralise the perpetrators while intensifying efforts to rid affected communities of terrorists, not only in Katsina State but across the country,” he said.
