A powerful windstorm and downpour struck the newly constructed Kugbo Bus Terminal in Nyanya, Abuja, on Tuesday afternoon.
The storm caused visible damage to the facility, sparking concerns among local residents and commuters.
Lere Olayinka, spokesperson for FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, confirmed that the weather also impacted the Nyanya pedestrian bridge and several nearby buildings.
Authorities, however, reported no casualties or loss of private property following the incident.
“From preliminary reports, no one was injured, and no vehicle was damaged,” the statement said.
It said Wike had ordered immediate measures to ensure safety and restore order in the affected area.
“To prevent a breakdown of law and order, as well as ensure the free flow of traffic, the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, has directed that security personnel be deployed to the scene, while immediate action will be taken to repair the damages caused by the windstorm.”
The incident has intensified existing public frustration regarding the operational delays of the FCT’s major bus terminals.
Despite the Kugbo and Mabushi terminals being completed months ago, they remain closed, prompting residents to repeatedly call for their immediate opening.
Commuters from satellite towns like Nyanya and Karu argue that these delays have exacerbated daily transit struggles.
There is a widespread belief that opening the hubs will streamline transport, ease gridlock, and bolster passenger safety.
While a start date remains pending, Minister Wike had said operations are expected to commence following the Federal Executive Council’s approval of a public-private management framework.
