Power Shift in Taraba: PDP’s Gov. Kefas’s Move to APC Reshapes State Politics

In a major political realignment, Taraba Governor Agbu Kefas has formally defected from the PDP to the APC.

The transition was finalized in Jalingo on Saturday, where Vice President Kashim Shettima was on hand to receive the state’s top official into the ruling party.

Vice President Shettima, conveying President Tinubu’s sentiments, expressed immense pride in the governor’s decision.

He specifically commended Kefas for his “inclusive leadership” and his unwavering focus on the development of Taraba State.

“The APC was built as a meeting point for people committed to development. Today, it is a thing of pride that Taraba has joined this fold. We welcome our brother home because, in truth, he has always been with us,” Shettima said.

According to him, the governor’s decision aligns with the APC’s founding ideals of progress and inclusivity.

He commended Kefas for understanding Taraba’s ethnic and religious diversity, urging residents to support the governor in advancing development.

“We are proud of Governor Agbu Kefas for his sense of inclusivity and his development drive. I urge the people of Taraba State to support him as he delivers on his mandate,” Shettima said.

He described Kefas as the undisputed leader of the APC in the state following his defection.

Persecondnews recalls that Kefas had initially planned to defect in November 2025, but postponed the move, citing the kidnapping of students in Kebbi State as the reason for the delay.

Prof. Nentawe Yilwada, the APC National Chairman, labeled the Governor’s entry a “major boost” capable of unlocking Taraba’s hidden potential.

He urged Kefas with the task of unifying party stakeholders and reassured the rank and file that every member would enjoy equal rights under his leadership.

Kefas, in his remarks, countered any claims of self-interest, stating that his defection was a “service-first” decision.

By joining the APC, he aims to bridge the gap between the state and the federal center to deliver lasting progress to his constituents.

“This is not about power, but purpose. We must align in order to deliver development. I will not abandon the mandate given to me; rather, I will strengthen it and ensure fairness to all,” Kefas said.
