In a move that has sent shockwaves through the political establishment, Kano Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has formally resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).

Attributing his exit to “deepening internal crises,” Yusuf stated the decision was necessary to prioritize the collective interests of the state.

The resignation, submitted to the NNPP Ward Chairman in Gwale LGA, is set to take effect on Sunday, January 25, 2026.

This is not a solitary move; the Governor is leading a massive exodus that includes 21 State Assembly members, eight House of Representatives members, and all 44 Local Government Chairmen, signaling a total realignment of Kano’s political landscape.

“I write with a deep sense of gratitude to formally notify the leadership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) of my decision to resign my membership of the party,” Governor Yusuf stated in his letter.

He expressed appreciation for the opportunity to be part of the party’s journey since 2022 and acknowledged the support he received.

He added: “I remain sincerely appreciative of the opportunity given to me by the party, its leadership, and members across Kano State to be part of its political journey since 2022, as well as the support, goodwill, and cooperation extended to me during my time in the party.

“In recent times, the party has been confronted with persistent internal challenges arising from leadership disagreements and ongoing legal processes, many of which are presently before the courts for judicial determination.”

He emphasized that his decision was taken in good faith, without ill will, and with a commitment to peace, unity, and progress in Kano State.

“After careful reflection, and without prejudice to the party’s capacity to resolve its internal challenges, I have come to the conclusion that my resignation is in the best interest of the people of Kano State.

“This decision is taken in good faith, without any ill will, and with a continued commitment to peace, unity, and the progress of Kano State.”

Persecondnews recalls that NNPP had urged Governor Yusuf to tender his resignation letter before defecting to another party, with Senator Elmasud Doguwa stressing that due process must be followed.
