Buhari’s widow, Aisha, reveals real cause of ex-president’s death

Former First Lady Aisha Buhari has clarified the cause of her husband’s passing, stating that the late President Muhammadu Buhari succumbed to pneumonia rather than cancer.

She shared these details while reflecting on the former leader’s final days.

Persecondnews recalls that Buhari had passed away on July 13, 2025, at the age of 82 in London, following a prolonged illness.

He was buried in his hometown of Daura in Katsina State on July 15, 2025, with full state honours.

Reflecting on the difficulty of her husband’s final moments, the former First Lady shared her perspective in the new biography, “From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari.”

In the book, authored by Charles Omole, she opens up about the hardships the ex-President faced at the end of his life.

She said: “The final days were difficult. ICU for some days, then the ward, then the slide. The last three days were the worst.”

Aisha Buhari blamed her late husband’s illness to decades of physical exposure dating back to his time in the military.

The book quoted her as saying: “He had been a soldier in the bush for 30 months, mostly in the South-South, soaked by rain in uniforms that dried on his body.

“Decades later, she believes, the cold had lodged in his lungs and bones — exacerbated by office air-conditioning. Pneumonia was the last adversary.”

The book disclosed that the sputum tests conducted on Buhari never indicated cancer.

“It was pneumonia, they said, but at his age, pneumonia can be sovereign,” it stated.
