NPA Cracks Down on Indiscriminate Parking at Apapa Port

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) says it is taking decisive action to restore order on the Apapa Port access roads.

The NPA has announced plans for the strict enforcement of traffic regulations and will begin towing trucks that are illegally parked or obstructing the flow of traffic.

“Members of the trucking community have been warned to either remove their trucks from the access roads and stop indiscriminate parking or face whatever consequences they get,” said Mr Sani Mohammed, Secretary General of the Association of Maritime Truck Owners (AMATO).

Mohammed, in a statement on Wednesday, said AMATO has been given a short grace period to sensitize its members and ensure full compliance with the directive.

He noted that indiscriminate parking has led to unnecessary losses for members through arrests, towing, impoundments, and fines.

“It is pertinent to note that indiscriminate parking, often arising from the shortage of adequate truck parks, has continued to result in unnecessary losses for members,”he stated.

To address these challenges, the Mainland Transit Park at 235, opposite Old SIFAX, Ijora Road, has been designated to accommodate dry cargo trucks, offering a secure environment and preventing indiscriminate towing.

“The facility offers a secure environment for parking and helps prevent indiscriminate towing of vehicles from the port corridors,” Mohammed added.

“AMATO remains committed to promoting a conducive and sustainable business environment for truck owners and drivers, partnering with stakeholders to ensure compliance and alleviate congestion at the Apapa Port.”
