The National Assembly has suspended all legislative activities following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London, United Kingdom, on Sunday.

The Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, announced the rescheduling of the plenary date in a statement on Monday.

Ogunlana stated that the leadership of both the Senate and the House of Representatives has directed that all plenary sessions and related activities be suspended until Tuesday, July 22.

This decision, he explained, was made in honor of the late president’s legacy and service to the nation.

The statement reads: “I am directed by the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives to inform all members of the National Assembly and the general public that all legislative activities in the National Assembly are hereby suspended immediately until Tuesday, July 22, 2025.

“The leadership of both chambers also extended condolences to the government and people of Nigeria, the government and people of Katsina State, and the Buhari family, including his wives and children.

“Lawmakers have been urged to adjust their schedules to participate fully in the burial activities of the late former President.

“Buhari will be remembered for his commitment to Nigeria’s unity and his integrity.”

Persecondnews had reported that Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s Head of State from 1983 to 1985 and later as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, died at the age of 82.
