NEMA confirms Abuja explosion as suicide bombing attempt

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed that Monday afternoon’s Abuja explosion was a suicide bombing attempt.

According to NEMA, the bomber detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) while trying to enter the Mogadishu Army Cantonment on the Mararaba-Nyanya expressway.

The blast instantly killed the bomber and injured a nearby passerby.

Persecondnews reported that authorities were alerted to the explosion around 1:47 p.m., with NEMA officials arriving at the scene, which was already secured by armed security personnel.

The injured civilian was evacuated to the National Hospital by the Nigeria Police Force’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal(EOD) unit, while forensic experts investigated the incident.

The operation concluded at 5:29 p.m., involving NEMA, the Military, Nigeria Police Force, DSS, and FRSC in a coordinated response.

The statement reads: “The team met stern looking security personnel at the already cordoned scene.

“Information gathered revealed that a Suicide Bomber attempted to sneak into the Barrack but met his Waterloo as the IED exploded on him while trying to negotiate an entry.

“The suicide bomber died instantly leaving one passerby injured. The EOD unit of the NPF evacuated the injured to the National Hospital and took over the scene for further investigation; bringing the operation to a close at 17:29hrs.

“Stakeholders present included NEMA, Military, NPF, DSS, and FRSC.”

Persecondnews recalls that this is not the first bomb incident in Mogadishu Army Cantonment, Persecondnews recalls that a bomb explosion rocked the Mammy Market within the Cantonment in Abuja on December 31, 2010, killing several people and injuring many others.

The blast, attributed to the Boko Haram terrorist group, occurred at 7:30pm.
