A violent uprising at the Koutoukalé prison in the neighboring Niger Republic, situated near the capital city of Niamey, has resulted in the escape of hundreds of dangerous individuals, including Boko Haram terrorists, criminals, and drug traffickers.

The inmates on Thursday overpowered the guards, seized weapons and vehicles, and fled the facility.

Eyewitnesses reported that a barrage of gunshots and explosions erupted from within the prison around midday, triggering a swift response from security personnel.

However, upon arrival, it became apparent that the inmates had already seized control of the facility, having successfully breached the robust security measures in place, including armored gates, barbed wire, and trenches, allowing them to escape.

It was gathered that two previous attempts by terrorists to attack the prison had been thwarted.

The Interior Minister of the Niger Republic has issued an urgent radio broadcast to all governors, confirming the prison break and appealing to village heads and religious leaders to report any suspicious individuals.

The Tillabéri region has imposed a curfew in response to the escape, and the entire River Niger region is on high alert, with security forces on heightened vigilance to apprehend the escaped inmates.
