Reps urge FG to put Samoa agreement on hold

The House of Representatives on Tuesday asked the Federal Government to put on hold the implementation of the Samoa Agreement, citing concerns about a clause related to LGBTQ+ rights.

They also assigned the Committee on National Planning to conduct a thorough investigation into the agreement and report back to the chamber within four weeks.

The resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance introduced by Minority Leader Aliyu Madaki and 87 other lawmakers during Tuesday’s plenary session in the green chamber.

The Samoa Agreement serves as the comprehensive legal framework governing the European Union’s relationships with 79 nations, encompassing 48 African, 16 Caribbean, and 15 Pacific countries.

Persecondnews recalls that a national daily, in its lead story last week, alleged that the agreement contained a clause to legalise same-sex relationships in Nigeria.

In response, the FG refuted the allegation, emphasizing that Nigeria has laws in place that prohibit same-sex relationships and warning the media outlet of potential legal consequences.
