The Senate has passed a bill seeking to prohibit Nigerian athletes from consuming performance-enhancing substances during or after sporting competitions.

Persecondnews reports that the bill titled “National Anti-Doping Bill 2024” was passed on Thursday at plenary.

President Bola Tinubu had requested the Senate to pass the bill last week in a letter to the upper chamber read by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin during the plenary session.

Tinubu explained that the bill aims to incorporate and implement the international convention against doping in sports in Nigeria in preparation for the 2024 Olympic Games in France.

He said that it was also meant to establish the Nigeria anti-doping centre to implement Nigeria’s obligations to the World Anti-Doping Code in conformity with international standards.

The Senate’s committee on judiciary, human rights, and legal matters presented its report, which the plenary session reviewed and approved, leading to the bill’s passage.

The chairman of the committee, Sen. Mohammed Monguno, presented the report.

The senators endorsed the committee’s recommendations and gave the bill final approval after a voice vote called by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, who chaired the plenary session.
