The Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone A, Ikeja, Lagos, has confirmed that a smuggler was accidentally killed in the Badagry area of Lagos State.

The Public Relations Officer for FOU Zone A, Theophilus Duniya, told newsmen on Tuesday that some men armed with charms and machetes attacked their team while evacuating smuggled rice.

Duniya said: “A smuggler, Saka Wakilu, and his gang attacked customs officers in Erekiti, a border town in Badagry, on Sunday at 4 a.m. They injured a customs officer in the face and a soldier in the leg.

“Our personnel, acting in self-defense, neutralized the gang leader to prevent him from inflicting more injuries on them.

“The gang leader was evacuated for immediate medical attention but unfortunately died on the way to the hospital.”

Duniya appealed to parents and community leaders to advise their children against engaging in criminal activities that could endanger their own safety and the well-being of others.
