Updated: Two escape death as light plane crashes, burst into flames in Lagos

Two people escaped death by the whiskers after a single-engine plane crashed and burst into flames on Oba Akran Avenue in Ikeja, Lagos State on Tuesday evening.

The two occupants were rescued alive by emergency workers.

The incident occurred adjacent AP Filling Station and United Bank of Africa (UBA) on Oba Akran Avenue.

The Coordinator, South West office of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, said the ill-fated South African-made Javir plane crashed but no casualty.

He said components of the engine have been retrieved by the police.

Also, commenting on the incident, the Permanent Secretary and Head of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, said plane registered 5NCCQ had two passengers.

“It has been safely removed from the road which is now free for vehicular movement.

“All emergency responders are now departing the scene. Further investigation is to be carried out by NCAA.

“The agency activated its disaster response plan to the above incident which occurred around 1600hrs. The scene has been discharged at 1730 hrs,” he said.

However, the spokesperson of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services, Mr Amodu Shakiru, claimed that four persons including the pilot who were on board the ill-fated plane were all rescued alive and taken to a nearby hospital as they sustained varying degrees of injuries.

He said: “The helicopter crashed into a building but nobody died. The helicopter was used for training and it has four occupants on board.

“They had an escort motorized team that was following them on the ground during the training routine exercise which is the standard protocol.

“The motorised team was the first to arrive at the scene. The occupants sustained varying degrees of injuries and are currently receiving medical attention. We will provide more details later.”
