FEC honours deceased second republic Minister, Unongo, observes one-minute silence

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday paid glowing tribute to the late Second Republic Minister of Power and Steel, Dr  Paul Unongo, a one-time member of the Council with the observance of a minute silence.

Unongo passed on Tuesday during a brief illness at the age of 87 years.

Persecondnews reports that Mr Boss Mustapha, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), had announced the death of Unongo shortly before the meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House, Abuja.

Until his death, Unongo was the Chairman of the Board of the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC).

Unongo, who had just finished National Youth Service in 1979, was appointed by the late President Shehu Shagari and was the youngest in the cabinet of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) administration.

In attendance were Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), the Chief of Staff to the President, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, the National Security Adviser (NSA), retired Maj.-Gen. Babagana Monguno.

Ministers who attended physically were Alhaji Lai Mohammed (Information and Culture),  Adamu Adamu ( Education), Chief Timipre Sylva ( Minister of State for Petroleum Resources), Mr Abubakar Aliyu (Power), Malam Abubakar Malami (Attorney General and Minister of Justice), Mr Muazu Sambo (Transportation), Sen. George Akume (Special Duties and intergovernmental Affairs).

Others include Chief Niyi Adebayo (Industry, Trade and investment), and Mr Umana Okon Umana (Niger Delta Affairs).
