…the first in LUTH, in Nigeria and in Africa, says Advisory Committee

The COVID-19 pandemic notwithstanding, for the first time in the annals of medical practice in Nigeria, a 68-year-old woman, who had a successful In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) conception, has been delivered of a set of twins at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba.

The sexagenarian was pregnant for the husband, who is in his 70s, for first time bringing joy to the hitherto joyless and barren marriage.

She was delivered of the babies on April 14 through an elective Caesarean section at exactly 37-week gestation, Prof. Wasiu Adeyemo, the Chairman, LUTH Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC), announced on Sunday.

Persecondnews culls from medical books that IVF is a process in which a human egg is fertilized outside the woman’s body.

“The woman was pregnant for the first time in her life,’’ he said.

According to him, the IVF and embryo transfer were done at a facility outside LUTH.

“The woman was, thereafter, referred to LUTH at early gestation and was subsequently managed till she was delivered of the babies.

“This is the first in LUTH, in Nigeria and in Africa,” Adeyemo, whose hospital recorded the feat, said excitedly.

On the health condition of the set of twins, Adeyemo said: “Both the mother and the babies are in good conditions.’’
