Buhari in Morocco: Historic ‘Atlantic’ Pipeline Project Tops Agenda As King Mohammed VI Host Iftar Dinner

President Muhammadu Buhari, arrived Rabat-Sale airport Sunday afternoon and was received by King Mohammed VI,  for a two-day official visit. The King was accompanied by Crown prince Moulay El Hassan and Prince Moulay Rachid,  to welcome President Buhari upon his arrival, Per Second News gathered.

King Mohammed VI has offered to host an official iftar in honour of the president and his delegation at the Royal Palace in Rabat.

During the two-day meeting, the two leaders will hold official talks and will co-chair a signing ceremony of several agreements, according to an official of the Moroccan Ministry of Household, Protocol, and Chancellery, who spoke to this newspaper under the condition of anonymity.

King Mohammed VI and President Buhari are also expected to hold talks on the Atlantic project, a pipeline which is set to link Nigeria and Morocco and may extend up to Europe.

 

The agreement to construct the pipeline project was signed in December 2016 during the King’s first official visit to Nigeria.

With such projects the King aims to diversify Morocco’s partnerships in Africa and to extend the South-South activities that the country has initiated with its traditional partners in the continent.

“In this agreement both countries agreed to study and take concrete steps toward the promotion of a regional gas pipeline project that will connect Nigeria’s gas resources, those of several West African countries and Morocco,” said Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyema, in 2016 immediately after the signing ceremony of the joint venture .
